Stone Age Survival Day
Step back thousands of years this Easter and discover whether you have the skills to survive the Stone Age!
Join us at Bestwood Country Park for a hands-on, family-friendly adventure that brings Britain’s earliest humans to life.
What to expect:
Travel back in time - Meet in the car park, put on your furs, and begin your journey into the Stone Age.
Woodland expedition - Walk through the forest while foraging for sticks for the fire and natural materials for shelter building. Along the way, learn how Stone Age people lived, hunted, and survived.
Build your base camp - On arrival, work together to construct a large, open-fronted shelter. Make it sturdy and comfortable—it will be your home for the day!
Fire lighting demonstration - Watch a live demonstration of traditional Stone Age fire-lighting techniques, then have a go at using fire lighters to practise your own skills.
Explore early human diets - Discover what our ancestors cooked on an open fire and the foods they gathered from the land.
Lunch break - Please bring a packed lunch—there are no café facilities on site.
Hands‑on activities - Rotate around a series of creative Stone Age–inspired activities, including cave painting, animal pen construction, and jewellery making using simple tools.
Light the campfire - Use your fire-lighting skills to create a small fire that will join others to form a large cooking fire. Use it to make hot chocolate and pop popcorn to enjoy inside your shelter.
Artefact handling - Examine real Stone Age artefacts and learn how early humans used them in everyday life.
Return to the present - Dismantle your shelters and journey back to modern times.
Please note, the activities will take place outside so please dress appropriately for the weather. Only in extreme weather conditions will the day be cancelled.
