DofE Gold Residential - Narrow Boat

DofE Gold Residential - Narrow Boat

DofE Gold Residential - Narrow Boat

The Mill Adventure Base Approved Activity Provider, in partnership with the Nottingham Narrow Boat Project, is proud to offer you the opportunity to complete the residential section of your Gold DofE Award on board one of two 70-foot narrowboats.

The project began 48 years ago, back in 1974, and has established itself as one of the most respected community boat projects in the country.

14th - 18th August 2023 = £325.00

23rd - 27th October 2023 = £325.00

The residential experience includes

• Completion of the National Community Boats' Association (NCBA) boat Handling Course (BHC).

• Five days & four-night full board accommodation on one of two 70-foot narrowboats.

• All course materials & certificate upon successful course completion.

• All facilities on-board.

• A great opportunity to wind down and try something different.

You will work towards achieving your Boat Handling Certificate, following the syllabus of the National Community Boat Association (NCBA). This certificate is recognised by many community projects and can qualify you for volunteering activities on the inland waterways.

Skippers and staff are all suitability experienced and qualified, DBS checked and hold a current First Aid Certificate. The accommodation will be in bunks on board one of two boats, Megan or Tinkers Leen.

You will learn how to steer a 70-foot narrowboat, operate locks, organise and lead the crew, boat preparation and maintenance, as well as boat responsibly and safety.

You will also learn something about the history and culture of the canals, get involved with the general housekeeping, cooking and cleaning of the boat, working and socialising as a team with your fellow boat mates.

There are two main routes that are used, both starting in historic Nottingham. The first is along the Beeston Canal, and onto the River Trent. We will then cruise up the River Soar towards Loughborough before returning. The other option is to head up the Trent and Mersey Canal towards Burton on Trent and back.

Be aware that closures on the canals or river can, on occasion, mean that plans may change at short notice.
